Understanding the Three Emotion Systems

A visual guide to the threat, drive, and soothing systems.

CFT is based on the idea that we have three main emotional systems.

Threat System (Red)

Detects and responds to danger. Emotions: anxiety, anger, disgust. When overactive: constantly on edge, self-critical.

Drive System (Blue)

Motivates seeking and achieving. Emotions: excitement, anticipation. When overactive: driven, never satisfied.

Soothing System (Green)

Rest, connection, safety. Emotions: calm, contentment. When underactive: can't relax, lack self-compassion.
