SDR Template and Guide

A blank sequential diagrammatic reformulation template with guidance notes on mapping reciprocal roles, procedures, and exits.

A template for creating Sequential Diagrammatic Reformulations (SDRs) with guidance notes.

Core components

Reciprocal Roles: Place at the centre. Show both poles (e.g., Criticising → Criticised). Use arrows to show direction. Procedures: Draw as loops coming out from and returning to the core. Label each trap, dilemma, or snag. Exits: Mark potential exits with a different colour or symbol. These are the alternatives to the procedural loops. Observing Eye: Draw this position to represent the reflective stance being developed.

Diagram construction tips

  • Build collaboratively with the client
  • Use the client's own words wherever possible
  • Start simple — complexity can be added over time
  • Ensure the client can describe it back to you
  • Make copies so the client can annotate their own

For clinical use by CAT practitioners.
